The Merrie-Woode Values: Community

July 10, 2026

Community: Living in a friendly, inclusive, and mutually supportive community makes it possible for girls and young women to grow into their best selves.

The culture of Merrie-Woode is overwhelmingly positive and uplifting for both campers and staff. Everywhere we turn, girls are encouraging each other and building each other up to tackle new challenges. One camper encourages her friends to sign up for the three-day hike, while another convinces her whole cabin to spend the afternoon rock sliding at Grimshaws. From performing in the Talent Show to going on a caving trip, our lives are richer because of the loving community that surrounds us at Camp.

That spirit of encouragement isn't limited to campers. Today was ACA's Camp Counselor Appreciation Day, and it was such a wonderful reminder of just how much our counselors contribute to the Merrie-Woode community. Counselors are often the first to cheer a camper on, celebrate a success, or help someone find confidence in a new challenge. They help shape the culture of Camp and the lives of Merrie-Woode girls for years to come.

To celebrate them, campers made cards for their counselors, Leadership Team set the tables, and we had candy and soda for all of them. We even sang, "We love you counselors, oh yes we do..." and had our counselors running around the Dining Hall! As if that wasn't enough excitement for one lunch, today was also All E Ice Cream! Every Friday, cabins that have earned all E's for excellent cabin cleaning enjoy a well-earned ice cream treat. It was the perfect way to round out a joyful afternoon of celebrating the people who make Camp so special.

Moments like today's celebrations may seem simple, but they reflect what makes Merrie-Woode so special: a community that takes time to recognize one another, celebrate each other's contributions, and make even an ordinary Friday feel meaningful. It's this kind of mutually supportive community that makes it possible for campers and staff alike to accomplish things they never imagined they could do. Whether you're tackling a challenging hike, learning a new skill, or simply finding the courage to be yourself, there are always people by your side, cheering you on.

Friendships forged at Merrie-Woode extend decades beyond the camper years, revealing ever more beautiful depth as we progress through life. All Merrie-Woode girls are bound by the collective memories we share and the traditions that create such a deep sense of belonging to the greater Merrie-Woode family.

One of our favorite Camp songs, Remember, beautifully captures the spirit of the Merrie-Woode community and the memories we carry with us long after summer ends:

"Remember the days you spent here, remember when you're away.

Remember the friends you've made here, and don't forget to come back someday.

Remember the blazing campfire, the friendships strong and true,

For you girls belong to Merrie-Woode, and Merrie-Woode belongs to you."

Our Main Session feels like it's flying by! We're nearing the halfway point, but our campers are making sure to soak up every second under Old Bald. With activities, table assignments, and so much of Camp life mixing girls from different cabins and age groups, it's always fun when campers get a chance to spend some time with others in their own age group. That's where PYSK comes in! PYSK stands for Page, Yeoman, Squire, and Knight, our four age groups here at Camp. For this Evening Program, campers split up by age group and head off to enjoy activities planned just for them. For this PYSK, our Pages and Yeomen teamed up and gathered around the campfire with BadHair. He shared Jack Tales and Appalachian oral tradition stories, keeping campers entertained from start to finish. We always love when BadHair comes to Camp, and this year was no exception! Our Squires were treated to a much-anticipated Dock Party! Between the music, floaties, water guns, and plenty of time in the lake, there was no shortage of laughter and fun down at the waterfront.

One of our classic Camp evening programs made its return this we ek: Counselor Hunt! Th e evening starts in Castle, where campers gather to hear the rules while counselors quickly change into all black in hopes of improving their hiding skills. Once the rules are explained, the counselors are given ten minutes to scatter across Camp and find the perfect hiding spot. Then, the hunt begins! Of course, the challenge doesn't end once a camper spots a counselor. To officially "claim" them, campers have to know the counselor's first and last name, their cabin, and at least one activity they teach. Campers race all over Camp searching everywhere they can think of, while counselors do their best to stay hidden for as long as possible.

Happy Fourth of July! We are so excited to celebrate America's 250th birthday here at Camp. We do things a little differently on the Fourth, and it's always one of our favorite days of the summer. The day starts with campers waking up to patriotic music instead of the usual wake-up bell, with hits like Born in the U.S.A. and Party in the U.S.A. playing across camp. Then, campers gather on the steps of their cabins to watch the annual "invasion." Our wonderful barn staff ride through camp shouting, "The British are coming!" on horses painted to match the red, white, and blue of the day, waving to campers as they kick off the festivities.
