WHY ALL GIRLS?

Since 1919, Camp Merrie-Woode has been a traditional, wilderness summer camp created specifically for girls. Now in its second century, Merrie-Woode continues to honor the vision of its founders, as a community where girls can grow, explore, and thrive.

Today, Camp is owned and operated by the Merrie-Woode Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to the guiding principles outlined in our Mission. Our focus remains the same as it was more than 100 years ago – nurturing the physical, intellectual, and spiritual development of girls and young women.

the power of an all girls environment

Everything we do at Camp is designed with girls in mind. In an all-girls setting, campers are free to explore new interests, take healthy risks, and discover their strengths without the social pressures that can arise in co-ed environments. Our small cabin groups foster deep friendships and meaningful connections, where campers learn to communicate openly, support one another, and build lasting friendships. We recognize the value of providing a space where girls can enjoy who they are, build emotional resilience, develop self-trust, and gain confidence through challenging themselves.

building confident leaders

Female leadership is modeled every day at Merrie-Woode. In addition to our female cabin counselors, nearly all of our activity staff, activity heads, and specialized instructors are women. They serve as exceptional mentors and role models, demonstrating what confident, capable leadership looks like. Campers are encouraged to express their ideas and take on leadership opportunities that build confidence for school, friendships, and future endeavors.

A positive alternative to social pressure

Today’s girls navigate a world of intense social comparison and pressure to be perfect, often magnified by social media. Merrie-Woode offers a refreshing alternative. In our friendly, non-competitive community, we emphasize encouragement over competition and personal growth over perfection. Camp is an irreplaceable experience where they can try new things and learn from other women. Each individual is valued for who she is and who she will become, and campers learn to celebrate one another while developing authentic friendships and a strong sense of self.

girls can do extraordinary things

Whether paddling rivers, climbing rocks, performing on stage, or learning a new sport, girls experience the satisfaction of mastering new skills. Seeing female instructors and peers excel in outdoor adventure sports such as rock climbing and whitewater paddling reinforces an important message: girls can do extraordinary things. At Merrie-Woode, campers leave with more than memories—they leave believing in themselves and knowing they are capable of more than they ever imagined.

“These directors and their counselors have put a soul into Merrie-Woode, the subtle influence of which upon the modern girl is gratifying to observe. They are providing the girls with the eyes of tomorrow.”
