With the end of the session getting closer, there are a ton of special traditions that happen in the last week of camp! This morning was the Bum’s Prank. The oldest cabin, Bum’s Rest, plans a prank for one of the last breakfasts of camp, complete with a theme, costumes, music, and more!

This year, the theme was America, more specifically “God Bless Bum’s Rest,” in celebration of the upcoming 250th Fourth of July. They focused on the Hamilton/Founding Fathers/1776 aspect of American history, complete with powdered wigs for all involved! Instead of the wake-up bell, we were awoken by Reveille, followed by “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “Party in the USA.” Bum’s decked out the Dining Hall, complete with the “Declaration of Bum's Rest” (with Dammie’s signature bigger than John Hancock’s), the infamous fake horse, and a canoe right in the middle of everything.

At one point, we said the Pledge of Allegiance, then the Bum's campers piled into the boat and started throwing tea bags at everyone à la the Boston Tea Party. From there, it turned into a full-on Hamilton moment, with sing-alongs and acted-out performances featuring everyone from the Schuyler sisters to Ben Franklin and George Washington. At one point, Paul Revere even ran through, warning us that “the British are coming!”. Somewhere in the chaos, the horse made its way back into the Dining Hall after a year-long hiatus, which only added to the energy and excitement of the whole thing.

They led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and right after, they all piled into the boat and started throwing tea bags at everyone à la the Boston Tea Party. From there, it turned into full-on Hamilton, with sing-alongs and theatrical performances featuring everyone from the Schuyler sisters to Ben Franklin and George Washington. At one point, Paul Revere even ran through the Dining Hall, warning us that “the British are coming!”.

The older girls look forward to getting to do this tradition for years, and all in all, it’s one of our most entertaining traditions and special way to close out the session with lots of fun and silliness.

Chug-a-wump,

Our Main Session feels like it's flying by! We're nearing the halfway point, but our campers are making sure to soak up every second under Old Bald. With activities, table assignments, and so much of Camp life mixing girls from different cabins and age groups, it's always fun when campers get a chance to spend some time with others in their own age group. That's where PYSK comes in! PYSK stands for Page, Yeoman, Squire, and Knight, our four age groups here at Camp. For this Evening Program, campers split up by age group and head off to enjoy activities planned just for them. For this PYSK, our Pages and Yeomen teamed up and gathered around the campfire with BadHair. He shared Jack Tales and Appalachian oral tradition stories, keeping campers entertained from start to finish. We always love when BadHair comes to Camp, and this year was no exception! Our Squires were treated to a much-anticipated Dock Party! Between the music, floaties, water guns, and plenty of time in the lake, there was no shortage of laughter and fun down at the waterfront.

One of our classic Camp evening programs made its return this we ek: Counselor Hunt! Th e evening starts in Castle, where campers gather to hear the rules while counselors quickly change into all black in hopes of improving their hiding skills. Once the rules are explained, the counselors are given ten minutes to scatter across Camp and find the perfect hiding spot. Then, the hunt begins! Of course, the challenge doesn't end once a camper spots a counselor. To officially "claim" them, campers have to know the counselor's first and last name, their cabin, and at least one activity they teach. Campers race all over Camp searching everywhere they can think of, while counselors do their best to stay hidden for as long as possible.

Happy Fourth of July! We are so excited to celebrate America's 250th birthday here at Camp. We do things a little differently on the Fourth, and it's always one of our favorite days of the summer. The day starts with campers waking up to patriotic music instead of the usual wake-up bell, with hits like Born in the U.S.A. and Party in the U.S.A. playing across camp. Then, campers gather on the steps of their cabins to watch the annual "invasion." Our wonderful barn staff ride through camp shouting, "The British are coming!" on horses painted to match the red, white, and blue of the day, waving to campers as they kick off the festivities.
