Internships: Earn additional college credit as well as to gain valuable experience.

Consider spending the summer at camp while working on a paid internship!

This is a great way to earn additional college credit as well as to gain valuable experience so that you can make the most of your summer. Camp Merrie-Woode® is committed to helping plan and monitor internships, which can enhance your camp responsibilities and allow you to earn college credit.

Most activity areas are conducive to internships: equine studies, education, psychology, and outdoor recreation.

Students also can create internships for a wider variety of areas such as drama, dance, studio arts, or environmental education.

You can create an internship by establishing a focus for an activity or subject area and presenting the idea to a sponsoring college professor. Keeping a journal, making a video or a final paper, and along with evaluation by the camp director are often ways to summarize the experience.

If you are interested in internship opportunities, contact phyllis@merriewoode.com for ideas.

Interns must apply through the camp application process and then work with a sponsoring university and professor. For counselors who are unable to establish internships through a department on their own campus, we have set up a partnership with Western Carolina University, which is 45 minutes away from camp in Sylva, NC.

Western Carolina will sponsor Camp Merrie-Woode® interns through the department of Continuing Education and Summer School. Bronwen Sheffield is the Extension Program Coordinator and she can be reached by e-mail at bsheffie@wcu.edu.
