YOU’RE A GRAND OLD FLAG…
Happy Fourth of July from camp! Instead of the normal wakeup bell, I was greeted by “Party in the USA” played over the PA system! As I made my way down to the front line, I saw the riding staff decked out in red, white, and blue parading the horses through camp to announce the holiday! Campers and counselors filled the Dining Hall in patriotic attire as a breakfast of waffles, blueberries, and strawberries was served. Instead of morning devotion and announcements being held in Castle, everyone gathered in front of the flag pole. No one saw me perched on top! The American Flag was raised, and patriotic songs such as “America the Beautiful,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” and “The Star Spangled Banner” were sung. With all of the beautiful weather that we have had, it was wonderful to sit outside.
After our gathering down at the waterfront, campers and counselors made their way to their normal activities. Mountaineering offered a trip to Grimshawes and a half day climb. With how warm and sunny it has been, this is a perfect place for campers to cool off in the mountain stream water. The waterfront was abuzz with swimmers, canoers, kayakers, and sailors!
Tonight’s evening program was Carnival! This is a tradition used to celebrate the Fourth of July and for everyone to be outside and together. It started off with a big barbeque, and campers scattered across the front line eating pulled pork, coleslaw, and baked beans. After dinner everyone broke off into groups and participated in a large rotation of activities. Slip’n Slide, a bounce house (that looked mysteriously like me), a dock party, and pie toss were a few of the activities! There was even a Dunk Tank that senior staff participated in, and I was able to throw a pinecone from a tree branch and dunk Denice! Once dusk fell everyone gathered on the front lawn to watch Jim put together a wonderful fireworks show! The fireworks lit up the sky and echoed off of Old Bald as campers and counselors watched in delight! I enjoyed the fireworks from the top of the boathouse and then headed back to my tree to get some much needed rest after such a fun day!
Hope you have a safe Fourth of July
