TODAY IS MY MOMENT, AND NOW IS MY STORY..
I sure needed the extra half hour of sleep this morning after the busy Fourth of July weekend! I’m pretty sure I still have some pie cream in my tail from the pie toss event this past Friday…
We lucked out enough to score another beautiful, clear day in the mountains. Everyone gathered around in the outdoor Chapel in their Sunday whites and listened to the parable of the Good Samaritan. This was a simple, powerful message for all campers and staff to hear about putting differences aside to treat others in need. After Chapel, there were Sunday activity signups which included a trip to the Brevard Music Center, a kite making class, climbing team tryouts, and play practice. After a hearty lunch and serene rest hour, campers made their way to their various activities.
The Barn staff put on a Kentucky Derby themed cookout for dinner. Campers and counselors showed up with their finest sun hats and dresses while they pretended to root for a favorite racehorse. Everyone was chatting and laughing on the waterfall field as they enjoyed burgers and hotdogs together. Following dinner, camp gathered and sang “Follow the Gleam” as everyone filed into the campfire ring. Three longtime counselors wrote vespers and shared their warm, pensive thoughts with the rest of the camp in between reflective songs such as “Today,” “Remember,” and “Like a Tiny Spark of Fire.” After “Shiney-Mineying” out onto the field to sing Taps, I darted up to my favorite building in camp (Tajar) to find a warm bed of knitting yarn to curl up in. I was quite surprised to find campers and counselors conversing and giggling inside when it was time to go to bed! I peered in the window to discover that the cast and crew of “Little Shop of Horrors” had a lock-in to promote bonding and teambuilding outside of rehearsal time.
Perhaps I’ll find a new sleeping place tonight- I’d better get on that!
